Across That Bridge by John Lewis

Across That Bridge

John Lewis

Across That Bridge is not the writer's biography, but Jhon Lewis remarked on Parts of his life and the Civil Rights movement in the form of these topics. Faith, Patience, Study, Truth, Act, Peace, and Love. Edmund Pettus Bridge and the City of Salma In Alabama are the symbols of the anti-discrimination movement against black people in the United States.

John Lewis is fascinated by Martin Luther King JR, as he says in part of  his book "without him, I do not know where I would be today." He says in describing his leader." someone who was a rare bird in the Blue sky of dreamers."

He mentions faith as the first and main factor in achieving freedom that one should strive for, not just dream about it.

" Nothing can stop the power of the committed and determined people to make a difference in our society." Page 7

"Freedom is not a state, it is an act." page 8

"Faith will be the lifeblood of all your activism, and it has the power to make a way out of no way."Page 49

Below I will mention some sentences from this book that I think are key and useful sentences.

"People depend on their leadership to help maintain stability and peace. the most vulnerable, the most susceptible people in our society especially deserve the truth." Page 104

"When a person dies, the dream does not die. you can kill a man, but the truth that he stood for will never die." page 114

"Each generation must do its part for freedom to ring." page 116

people have asked me, "what happened to the dream?" I say to them and I say to you "the dream is Us." page 116

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." Martin Luther King Jr

many people believed Martin Luther King just had some dream but John who is in his book, cross that bridge says " He believed that Faith had no meaning unless it had the power to resolve the problems of our daily lives."

"None are free until all are free." Page122

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “No one is free until we are all free.”

fear leads us to doubt our ability to overtake someone who oppresses us, and if we have forgotten our faith we may back down and submit. we May begin to believe there is not a way out of the situation. Page 136

" It is so strange to me that he have learned to fly in the air like birds, learned to swim in the ocean like a fish, shoot a rocket to the moon, but we have not yet learned how to live together in harmony with one another. " page 151

how many deaths will it take? how much war must we visit upon ourselves before we recognize that we are does not work? war is bloody; war is messy. it not only tends to hide the truth but to sacrifice the truth. war postpones The unalterable need to recognize our actions to our knowledge of the truth, whether they are the actions of nations or of single individuals. Page 165

Martin Luther King Jr said that peace is not the absence of tension, but the presence of Justice. it is not the cessation of war that brings peace; it is justice that brings peace, even in the midst of struggle. Page 165

"darkness cannot overcome darkness, only light can do that. violence can never overcome violence only peace can do that, hate can never overcome hate, only love can do that." page 187

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. people must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite." Nelson Mandela, long walk to freedom."

"Nonviolent action stands on the truth of the unity of all humankind, and it sees the offending party as a brother or sister who has gone wrong." page 193
